The political opposition in Venezuela must “accept that it has lost and congratulate Nicolás Maduro on his victory,” the Kremlin urged in a statement, quoted by Reuters.

Both Maduro and his opponent declared victory in Sunday’s presidential election, and protests broke out in the South American country yesterday against the president’s third term in office.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said outside powers should not try to destabilize Venezuela, which is a close ally of Russia, after Washington and several other foreign governments questioned the official results.

“It is very important that attempts to sow turmoil in the situation in Venezuela are not fueled by third countries, by third parties, and that Venezuela be free from external interference,” Peskov stressed, BTA reported.

Protests and clashes broke out in the center of the Venezuelan capital Caracas yesterday. Demonstrators accused authorities of rigging the election after Maduro was declared the winner of the vote. Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez said more than 20 soldiers were wounded during the clashes.
