Employment shows in August the typical slowdown at the end of the summer campaign. Affiliation falls in all sectors and registered unemployment rises. The good evolution of employment in recent months, which had been at odds with the adverse economic environment and demonstrating the resilience of Spanish companies, worsened again in August.

As CEPYME has been demanding, so that employment projections do not worsen, it is necessary to tackle the sharp rise in costs that Spanish companies bear in the form of more taxes, contributions, inflation and financial costs to encourage hiring, as well as generate a transparent environment in the one that can really measure the evolution of the jobs, altered in recent months by doubts about how many discontinuous permanents are really active, something that especially affects seasonal sectors such as agriculture or tourism.

CEPYME celebrates the record for the month of August of 20.7 million affiliates, but this does not obscure the fact that companies are simultaneously facing the serious problem of unfilled vacancies, something that undermines their growth and investment possibilities.

For all these factors, the Confederation warns that this autumn can be especially hard for companies and this can have consequences for employment. Not in vain, August has closed with 14,100 fewer affiliates in the primary sector, 15,900 fewer in Industry, 18,800 fewer in Construction and 136,500 fewer in Services. In the same monthly interval, the drop in the self-employed is close to 11,000.

Spanish households face the autumn with strong increases in the shopping basket and are also affected by the rise in financial costs. These are bad signs for consumption that will undoubtedly affect some Spanish companies, mostly SMEs, which have shown their responsibility and commitment by maintaining their workforces in an environment full of difficulties in recent months.

That same responsibility is the one that CEPYME demands from the parliamentary groups. The Confederation calls for an awareness of the business reality when legislating and a slow reflection on the sharp increases in tax, labor and regulatory costs that companies have been suffering so that they are alleviated so that companies can continue supporting employment and, therefore, the essential public services that society enjoys.
