(Malik Muhammad Ashraf) Lahore High Court reinstated National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) Chairman Lt. Gen. Muhammad Munir Afsar.

A 2-member bench headed by Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal of Lahore High Court held a hearing, on this occasion, lawyer Rashidi Nawaz appeared on behalf of the federal government.

The court suspended the decision of the single bench and issued notices to the parties and sought answers. During the hearing, lawyer Rashidi Nawaz took the position that the appointment of Nadra Chairman Lt. Gen. Munir Afsar was done according to the laws. Newly appointed as per the rules, the Selection Committee approved the appointment on merit out of 6 candidates.

He further said that the Federal Cabinet had approved the amendment of the new appointment rules.

Earlier, the decision to invalidate the appointment of NADRA Chairman was challenged in the Lahore High Court, for which an intra-court appeal was filed in the High Court by the Home Secretary.

In the appeal, the President of Pakistan through the Secretary and the Prime Minister through the Secretary and others were made parties.

In the appeal, it was held that the single bench gave a decision contrary to the facts, the petition filed before the single bench was not hearable, the petition could not have been filed before the Lahore High Court principal seat.

It was further said that the elected federal government had granted a three-year extension to Chairman NADRA in March and the court was requested to annul the single bench judgment and order immediate suspension of the judgment.

It should be remembered that on September 6, Lahore High Court Chairman NADRA ordered the removal of Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar from his post.

It should be noted that as a result of the general elections held on February 8, 2024, the elected federal government approved the appointment of Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar as Chairman NADRA for 3 years by approving the summary of the Ministry of Interior through circulation on March 29, 2024. .

The federal government had approved the inclusion of Rule 7A in the NADRA Rules 2020, under which any serving officer can be appointed as Chairman NADRA in the national interest, provided that the serving officer’s rank is not below Grade 21.
