The Large Hadron Collider will be overclocked to the maximum

by time news

From July 5, the Large Hadron Collider will operate at a record power of 13.6 trillion electron volts. This is stated in a press release from the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

The report notes that at record power, the collider will operate around the clock for almost four years. It has been running since April. Prior to that, he had been under modernization for three years.

The new power level will allow scientists to continue their research on the Higgs boson, discovered with the help of the collider in 2012. Two beams of protons will be released towards each other, at close to the speed of light. But this time there will be 20 times more collisions than when the Higgs boson was discovered.

With the help of new research, scientists want to continue the search for the decays of the Higgs boson into dark matter particles. Get closer to solving fundamental problems of physics.

The Large Hadron Collider is built at a depth of 100 meters on the border of Switzerland and France. It is an annular tunnel in which a proton accelerator is installed. More than 10,000 scientists and engineers from more than 100 countries, including Russia, are participating in research at the collider.
