RAS Academician Yuri Oganesyan commented on the event

The largest in Eurasia, the Periodic Table of Mendeleev, almost twice the size of the one in Spain, opened in Dubna near Moscow. The event is timed to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research located here and the city itself.

As JINR informed “MK”, the area of the table is more than 284 sq. M. m, it was placed on the wall of the swimming pool “Archimedes” on the Volga embankment. The table is clearly visible both from the city side and from cruise ships passing by.

It is noteworthy that it is at JINR, in the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions. GNFlyorov under the guidance of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yuri Oganesyan, all known to date superheavy elements were obtained – from 113th to 118th (the latter is even named after the scientist – “Oganeson Og”). Yuri Tsalakovich is the second scientist in the world, after whom a new element of the Periodic Table was named during his lifetime (the first was the American scientist Glenn Theodore Seaborg).

– If you look at the periodic table on the Internet, there are a huge number of them, in my opinion, 1,500 species, – says Yuri Tsalakovich himself. – We have chosen not only a decorative option, but also meaningful from the point of view of science. Our table will look very good at night when it is backlit. In addition, next to the table on the left there is a free field, on it you can broadcast lectures, talk about the history of the discovery of elements, about their chemical properties. The panel will become a new landmark of the science city of Dubna, popularizing science.

REFERENCE “MK”

Scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) have made an outstanding contribution to the discovery of the heaviest elements of the Periodic Table. In total, since the day of JINR’s foundation (1956), the table has been replenished with 18 new elements (from 101 to 118), of which 10 have been synthesized at JINR, including 5 of the heaviest elements. The names of two of the elements discovered at JINR – dubnium and moskovium – are associated with the location of the institute, and two more, flerovium and oganeson, are associated with the names of prominent scientists.
