The Khizi-Absheron wind power plant in Azerbaijan will be launched in the first phase of operation in the second quarter of 2025.

As reported by Day.Az, Abid Malik, regional director for Central Asia at the Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power, said this in an exclusive interview with Trend.

He stressed that the Khizi-Absheron wind power plant will include a total of 37 wind turbines.

“We plan to commission the power plant and commence operations under the first phase of operation by early Q2 2025. This initial phase will be an important milestone in our capacity expansion strategy as we work towards achieving full operational capacity,” Malik said.

It should be noted that the 240 MW Khizi Absheron Wind Farm will be the first independently developed utility-scale wind power project in Azerbaijan and the largest in the Caucasus region. The plant will generate up to 893 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 400,000 tons per year. It will operate for 25 years on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis and will be operated and maintained by ACWA Power.

The power plant will be built in two locations: Zone 1 in the Absheron region and Khizi 3 in the Khizi region, with 37 wind turbines positioned to optimally capture wind. The project is in line with Azerbaijan’s goals to diversify its economy and modernize its energy system, including increasing foreign direct investment in the non-oil sector and exports, as outlined in the Strategic Road Map for National Economic Prospects. The Khizi-Absheron Wind Farm is a key element of these economic diversification efforts.
