AIG Women’s Open opens at St Andrews
‘Rolex Annika Major Award’ decided

The ‘Home of Golf’ will crown the final major queen of the season.

The AIG Women’s Open, the last major tournament of the LPGA Tour season, will be held for four days from the 22nd at the St. Andrews Links Old Course (par 72) in Fife, Scotland, UK. This tournament, known as the British Women’s Open until 2019, will be held at the St. Andrews Links Old Course, the birthplace of golf, for the third time, following 2007 and 2013. This year’s AIG Women’s Open has a total prize money of $9 million (approximately 12 billion won), including $1.35 million (approximately 1.8 billion won) for the winner.

The outcome of this tournament, the fifth major stage of the season, will also determine the fate of the ‘Rolex Annika Major Award’, which is given to the player with the best performance in the major tournament of the year. This award, which was created in 2014, is given to the player with the highest major award points among the season’s major tournament winners. Points are awarded differentially to players who place in the top 10 of the major tournament.

Currently, Japan’s Ayaka Furue is in the lead with 70 points. Furue, who won the Amundi Evian Championship this year, also tied for sixth at the U.S. Women’s Open. Yang Hee-young, who won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, is tied for second with 60 points along with Chevron Championship winner Nelly Korda (USA) and U.S. Women’s Open champion Yuka Saso (Japan). A reversal is possible depending on the results of this tournament. Among Korean players, Inbee Park in 2015, So Yeon Ryu in 2017, and Jin Young Ko in 2019 have won this award.

A total of 15 Korean players will participate in this tournament. Ko Jin-young, Yang Hee-young, and Kim Hyo-joo, who participated in the Paris Olympics, will participate. Kim In-kyung, the winner of this tournament in 2017, and Shin Ji-ae, the champion in 2008 and 2012, have also declared their participation. Yang Hee-young is the only Korean player to win on the LPGA Tour this year. Ko Jin-young rose from 4th to 3rd in the world rankings after tying for 6th at the ISPS Handa Scottish Women’s Open, which ended on the 18th.

The AIG Women’s Open will also feature Korda, who has won six LPGA Tour titles this season, the most, and Paris Olympic gold medalist Lydia Ko (New Zealand). Lauren Coughlin (USA), who has won two of the last three tournaments, including the Scottish Women’s Open, will also be participating in the tournament. Overcoming the unpredictable weather conditions characteristic of links courses adjacent to the ocean and avoiding the tricky bunkers placed throughout the course will be the key to becoming a major queen.
