The late actor Lee Sun-kyun has been selected as the recipient of the Korean Film Achievement Award at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). A special program titled ‘A Beautiful Person, Lee Sun-kyun’ will be held in his honor at the film festival in October.

The Busan International Film Festival Executive Committee announced on the 23rd that it had selected actor Lee Sun-kyun as this year’s recipient of the Korean Film Achievement Award, which is given to filmmakers who have contributed to raising the status of Korean films and their global growth. The award will be presented at the opening ceremony on October 2nd.

The special program to honor the deceased consisted of screenings of six of his representative works and a special talk event. The screenings included three of Lee Sun-kyun’s early works that established him as a movie actor to the public, including “Paju (2009)” for which he won the Best Actor Award at the 2010 Las Palmas International Film Festival, “Our Sunhi (2013)”, and “A Hard Day (2014)”. In “Paju,” Lee Sun-kyun played a character with a sense of mission from the student movement and received praise for his delicate portrayal of a dualistic character. In “A Hard Day,” he appeared as an immoral detective and showed off intense action and tense acting.

In addition, ‘Parasite’ (2019), which was the first Korean film to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and swept four Academy Awards, and his last work ‘The Land of Happiness’ (2024), in which he played an upright soldier involved in the assassination of the president, will also be screened. In addition, the drama ‘My Mister’ (2018), which gave comfort to many viewers with its calm and warm acting, will also be screened. This screening will show episode 5 of the 16-episode drama, which is evaluated as having deeply conveyed the emotions of Park Dong-hoon, which he played.
The 29th Busan International Film Festival will be held for ten days from October 2nd to 11th at the Busan Cinema Center.
