On the first day, the participants will compete on the “Smeceres sila” track in a duathlon, and on Sunday in Riga in a team sprint. Therefore, after a two-year break, the roller skiing championship stage will take place in the capital, this time in the renovated and beautiful Uzvaras Park. From now on, only the team sprint champion Lauris Kaparkalējs will participate in this stage of the representatives of Latvia who have achieved success in the world championship in roller skiing, informs Ivars Bācis, the representative of the Latvian Skiing Federation.
The Latvian roller skiing championship started in the middle of July, when together with the World Cup stage in Madona, young people and later also juniors and adults competed in the specific 200m sprint in the center of Madona on Raina Street. At the end of August, the second stage was held with traditional distances with an interval start in classics and skating. Now it’s time for the final stage, which will take place at different venues.
The first day of the competition was originally planned in Sigulda at the “Fischer Skiing Center”, but it was moved to Madona, where the participants will compete in the duathlon, which was first introduced in 2020 and took place in Sigulda. The duathlon includes cross-country running and then roller skiing, which, unlike last year, will be in the classics. As always, the smallest participants will have ski cross instead of duathlon. Thus, roller skiers will visit Madona for the second time this year as part of the national championship.
On the second day of the competition, the participants will compete in the capital, because in cooperation with the Riga Sports School “Arkādija”, the conclusion of the third stage of the Latvian championship in roller skiing is planned for Uzvaras Park on Sunday. Therefore, this will be the second important competition organized by RSS “Arkadija” this year, because in January, the athletics competition “Arkadija Riga Cups” was held in the renovated Sports arena, which gathered a strong team and also several foreign participants.
The stages of the Latvian championship in roller skiing were held in Uzvaras sports park in 2021 and 2020, as well as a couple of times before that, but for two years, while reconstruction work was going on there, competitions in roller skiing and other sports had to be moved to another venue.
In the renewed and gorgeous Uzvaras Park in Riga, roller skiers will find out the best teams in the freestyle sprint. Each team will have two members, each taking turns to perform six stages together, or three times each. In the reconstructed park, there will no longer be only a plain, but small hills have been created.
Just now, three Latvians won medals at the world championship in roller skiing in Italy, of which only Lauris Kaparkalējs will compete this weekend. Raimo Vigants, who won two golds as well as the overall title, had planned to participate in the team sprint with Nikas Saulītis, who unfortunately has fallen ill, but a duathlon after four days of competition in Italy would be a bit too much. On the other hand, the bronze medalist in the junior sprint is in the FIS camp in Italy.
Both day’s competitions will start at 11.00, with the smallest participants from S10 and V10 going to the start.
