Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, one of the world’s most famous lyrical singers, will make her debut on the 9th at the Roman Theater in Mérida. The program is entitled ‘Homage to Spain’ and includes arias from ‘Carmen’, the opera that gave her worldwide fame and which, according to critics, is the best version heard in decades, along with pieces from zarzuela. Garanča will be accompanied by the Extremadura Orchestra conducted by Karel Mark Chichon, her husband.

The singer has become the greatest promoter of Spanish music throughout the world and is a very good connoisseur of our culture because she also lives several months a year in Benalmádena. The Mérida program includes themes from zarzuelas by Chapí, Barbieri and Luna, which will be completed with solo orchestral pieces by Marquina, Penella, Giménez and Sotoullo y Vert (in the latter cases, the intermissions of ‘La boda de Luis Alonso’ and ‘The legend of the kiss’).

Garanča has developed her career evolving in the roles at the rate at which her voice was transforming and moving away from patterns typical of the divas of the past that are now no longer easily accepted by artists. As she has explained in a long interview with this newspaper, “many artists of the last century sacrificed her personal life for her career.”

She has carefully avoided it by choosing her roles and the level of her activity very well, without ceasing to be one of the most acclaimed artists by the public around the world. It is proven by her great successes at the MET in New York and her regular presence at the Vienna Opera, where she has already close to 200 performances in twenty different roles.
