The law prohibits cars registered in Belarus from staying in Latvia /

The amendments to the law stipulate that those vehicles registered in Belarus, which are located on the territory of Latvia, must be exported or registered for participation in road traffic in Latvia by October 31 of this year.

The law provides for two exceptions. Exceptions will apply to persons with mobility impairments who drive their own specially equipped vehicle registered in Belarus and enter for the purpose of visiting relatives. Also, the application to enter Latvia will be asked to be reviewed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in special matters related to the state’s interests.

In exceptional cases, persons will have to ask the Financial Intelligence Service for permission to enter the territory of Latvia, which can be issued for a period of up to three months.

A vehicle registered in Belarus is registered regardless of the period of time the vehicle is in Latvia and participating in road traffic and regardless of the nationality of the vehicle owner.

After the specified deadline, Belarusian vehicles will be able to enter Latvia only to cross the territory of Latvia once in transit, by applying in advance in the e-services provided by the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD).

It is planned that in case of non-compliance with the new regulation, Latvia will be able to confiscate vehicles registered in Belarus in favor of Ukraine, supporting the Ukrainians in their fight for the independence of their country.

As reported, the State Revenue Service (SRS) has prohibited persons with vehicles registered in Belarus – light passenger cars – from entering the European Union (EU) through Latvia-Belarus and Latvia-Russia border crossing points from July 16.

In order to reduce the risks of evasion of sanctions, the EU, by approving the current package of sanctions against Belarus, has largely adjusted the sanctions imposed on Belarus with the sanctions imposed on Russia, stressed the SRS. It is stipulated that it is prohibited to import goods from Belarus that allow Belarus to diversify its sources of revenue, thus allowing it to engage in Russian aggression against Ukraine, if these goods originate in Belarus or if they are exported from Belarus. The annex also includes passenger cars.
