the left facing the trap of the referendum motion

by time news

“Low manoeuvre”, “dirty work”, “democratic heist”. The communist deputy of Seine-Maritime Sébastien Jumel does not take off. Tuesday, January 31, he learned with his colleagues from the New Popular, Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) that it was the referendum motion tabled by the National Rally (RN) against the pension reform that had been retained in the conference of presidents at the National Assembly, and not that carried by the left. And this while on January 24, the Nupes, on the initiative of the Communists, had been the first to register – twenty-four hours before that of the RN – a text signed by 98 deputies, asking for the holding of a referendum in ahead of the discussion on the bill on February 6.

To arbitrate between the far right and the left, the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, proposed a draw, based on the model of motions of prior rejection. Put to the vote, this method of deciding was supported by the presidential coalition, the National Rally and the centrist group Liot against the opinion of Nupes. The LR group abstained. In the entourage of the president, we claim to have found ourselves faced with a ” law void “the rules of the Assembly not specifying how to decide between several motions tabled by different groups. “The draw solution was the least bad of the solutions, the least bad legally”, justifies the president of the MoDem group, Jean-Paul Mattei.

For the four left-wing parties, on the contrary, Yaël Braun-Pivet should not have “accept the later deposit of the RN group”, they wrote to him on Tuesday, contesting a process “completely unique” et “scandalous”. Even in the event of a draw, the result should have been “weighted by the number of signatories”, and this to the advantage of Nupes. Tuesday evening, Yaël Braun-Pivet rejected their request, arguing that“in the absence of specific regulatory provisions and precedents, the Conference of Presidents was the only body able to set the applicable rules”.

” Shame ! »

On the left, the relative majority of Emmanuel Macron is accused of seeking to divert attention and divide at a time when, in the streets, France is beating the pavement against pension reform. “Choosing your comfort opposition which does not fight either in the Assembly or in the street on the day of a huge popular mobilization: shame! », launched the president of the LFI group, Mathilde Panot. “The Macronists are playing with fire, with the devil”denounces Sébastien Jumel.
