The left party Rebellious France (LFI) announced this Monday that it would suspend discussions with the rest of the progression to agree on a single candidate for prime minister on behalf of the coalition government of the New Popular Front (NFP), which remained the main force in the National Assembly.
“At the moment, we will not participate in any further debate regarding the formation of the government,” said in a statement the formation founded by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who accused the French Socialist Party (PS) – a member of the NFP along . with the environmentalists and the Communists – on “political blockade”.
The “impass” caused by the PS, they also warned, will not be solved by the “improvisation of an external candidature”, as suggested by the first socialist secretary, Olivier Faure, this Monday in an interview with the public channel France Info .
The PS responded by declaring that it regrets the decision of the LFI and that it is working “together for several days to find the name of a prime minister and to establish an NFP government.”
“There was never the will in the PS to impose a systematic veto on any candidacy arising from the New Popular Front. We expressed disagreement about one candidacy just as others expressed it about others,” the socialist party said in a statement.
For this reason, the PS announced that they will join the Communist Party and the environmentalist EELV in seeking the head of the Government “a common candidacy arising from civil society that will allow the entire left to come together around the project which we have protected.”
A unique effort
LFI accuses the socialist leadership of trying to “impose its own candidacy” on the NFP, arguing that it is “the only one that will be acceptable” to the French president, Emmanuel Macron, who has the power to appoint a prime minister. , although the National Assembly can later cancel it as a motion of censure if it lacks sufficient support.
They show this blockade with a socialist rejection of the candidacy for prime minister Huguette Bello, president of the regional council of La Reunión, which was proposed by the communists and validated by the non-extenders.
They themselves, they also recalled, proposed four high-profile names from the formation itself (including Mélenchon), which were not accepted either.
The last major hurdle in the complex internal negotiations on the left, which have continued since the results were announced on July 7, is the nomination of a single candidate for the presidency of the new National Assembly, which will usher in this new legislature. Thursday.
“Enough of the manipulations. Our decision is this: we demand one candidacy for the presidency of the National Assembly and we will not resume discussions on anything else until this is resolved,” said Mélenchon on the social network X.
The Socialist Party also declared that it is still in favor of a “single candidacy” of the NFP for the presidency of the National Assembly.
A left-wing prime minister
The calls from some members of socialism, for example the deputy Philippe Brun, “to replace the New Popular Front with another coalition with Macron sectors” have not gone down well with the rebel side, an inspiration that has disappeared from the presidential camp too. .
“We will not return to it (in relation to the negotiations to agree on a government) until the Socialist Party has refused to veto a candidacy that is not its own, that it has declared to refuse any kind of agreement with the Macron and that he has confirmed. that he is willing to implement the program of the New Popular Front,” confirmed LFI in its statement.
From the moment the unexpected results of the second round of the early legislative elections became known, the NFP agreed to Macron’s demand that the next prime minister come from the left, since the NFP will be the first force in the Assembly number of seats, although far from a clear majority of 289 delegates.
In total, the NFP added 195 seats with its partners, while Macronism got 163 and the far right Marine Le Pen, who started as a favorite, another 143.
Macron, for his part, has declared that he will wait until the parties succeed in building a strong majority that guarantees governability, which is currently a long way off.
While waiting for that to happen, it is expected that the current government led by Gabriel Attal will resign before the 18th, the start date of the new Assembly session.
