Atopic Eczema Patients Also Suffer From Eye Conditions, Research Shows

A recent dissertation from Utrecht University has revealed that up to 90% of patients with moderate to severe atopic eczema (CE) also have an eye condition. This groundbreaking finding comes from the research of Roselie Achten, who recently received her PhD from the university.

In addition to their skin condition, patients with CE often experience other complaints such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and food allergies. Now, it has been discovered that eye disorders, specifically ocular surface disease (OSD), are also common in moderate to severe CE.

During her research, Achten delved into the clinical characteristics, risk factors, and disease mechanism of OSD. The findings showed that 90% of patients with moderate to severe CE already had OSD prior to treatment with dupilumab.

Further investigation revealed that these patients had lower levels of goblet cells in the conjunctiva compared to healthy individuals. Additionally, higher levels of biomarkers related to the severity of CE were found in the tear fluid of patients with moderate to severe OSD, in comparison to those without or with mild OSD.

Interestingly, the research also found that during treatment with dupilumab, the function of the goblet cells decreased. Eyelid eczema was also found to be associated with the development of OSD both before and during treatment with dupilumab. Furthermore, it was discovered that dupilumab entered the eye, as it was found in the tear fluid of CE patients treated with the medication.

The implications of this research are vast, as it sheds light on the interconnected nature of atopic eczema and eye conditions. With this newfound knowledge, medical professionals may be better equipped to treat and manage the ocular health of patients with CE.
