The logistics and transport sector grows almost 5 percent in 2022 and is looking for professionals

Manpower has presented the report ‘Distribution and Supply Chain 2023. Itinerary of talent and employment in Spain’. This document summarizes the key figures of the sector and identifies and analyzes the main challenges and trends regarding employment. The logistics and transportation industry grew by 4.5 percent in the past year, with an increase in business volume in all its subsectors, including rail.

This report reveals that logistics and transport, including rail, are registering growth “which is driven by the evolution of the sector towards an increasingly efficient and sustainable service, thanks to its ability to diversify and personalise”. As regards the employment they generate, it is worth noting that expert professionals in information technology (IT), data analysis and sustainability are in particular demand, although 78 percent of companies say they have difficulties finding them. Another noteworthy fact is that the rate of incorporation of women has multiplied in recent years, and has doubled that of men in 2021-2022, although the rates are still low, according to the report. In addition, green jobs are a growing trend in the sector, with profiles ranging from sustainable mobility specialist, waste coordinator or environmental director.

One of the factors that has had a positive influence on this growth trend, which is estimated to continue in 2023 and also in the future, is the automation of the supply chain, digitalization and the incorporation of technology. In this sense, it is estimated that by 2030 the increase in this process automation will reduce costs by almost half.

Faced with this process of evolution, the logistics and transport sector needs professionals with skills that were not traditionally associated with the sector. This list is headed by those profiles that have to do with technology and data analysis, followed by sustainability and engineering.

From ManpowerGroup it is highlighted that “The medium and long-term competitiveness of companies throughout the supply chain is conditioned by their ability to transform in a double sense: on the one hand, to promote their digitization process and technological adoption and, on the other, another, to incorporate or develop the necessary talent to be able to carry it out. Betting on training translates into a greater ability to attract talent, the loyalty of current teams and, in this environment of talent shortage, in companies that are more prepared to compete”.
