The longest power cut in history..! Disaster awaits in 2023

by time news

Nihal Wieraratne, President of Sri Lanka Electricity Board Engineers Association, has warned that there is a possibility of darkness covering Sri Lanka in the months of July, August and September 2023.

Commenting on the press conference held today, he said that the country will face the longest power cut in history.

Dark July

He further commented, “From September 2022 through the rest of this year and up to April 2023, 38 ships will arrive with 60,000 metric tonnes of coal for power generation.

However only 4 ships have arrived so far. The fifth ship will be delayed due to some issues at the port.

If these 38 vessels are not available by April 15, there will be a massive power cut in the months of July, August and September.

It will be the first major blackout in history. That’s why we say 2023 could be a dark July.

Lakvijaya Power Plant supplies 45% of the country’s electricity demand. If coal is not available now, the cost would be very high if electricity is sourced from other thermal power plants.

As Sri Lanka Electricity Board, we hope to be able to produce electricity at a low cost.

Otherwise, there will be a massive power outage. In no way can that power cut be done by buying emergency power,” he said.
