Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has said that he will fulfill his promises to release those associated with the LTTE.

The Sri Lankan Civil War began on 23 July 1983 between the Sri Lankan Army and the LTTE and ended on 18 May 2009. LTTE leader Prabhakaran who fought for Tamil Eelam and many senior leaders of the organization were killed by the Sri Lankan army. The 26-year civil war between the LTTE and the Sri Lankan Army made the world look back. Various human rights organizations have alleged numerous human rights violations in this civil war. During this war, many LTTE members were captured and imprisoned in various prisons.

In this situation, Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardene, who addressed the Parliament of Sri Lanka, said, “UN. The Government of Sri Lanka will fulfill the promises made in the Human Rights Council. Steps are being taken to free the LTTE who are locked up in jails. The work to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act has reached its final stage. These 2 main demands are the UN. Presented to the Human Rights Council. President Ranil Wickremesinghe will issue necessary guidelines for the release of the LTTE who have been locked up in jails for a long time. The cabinet has approved the draft bill to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act. It will be tabled in the parliament soon,” he said.
