The usual autumn revival in the German labor market is only starting slowly this year. The number of unemployed fell in September, but “significantly less” than usual.
The number of unemployed people in Germany fell by 66,000 to 2.806 million people in September compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate fell by 0.1 points to 6.0 percent, said the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg. Compared to the same month last year, the number of unemployed people was 179,000 higher in September, with the rate increasing by 0.3 percentage points. As the BA also announced, 890,000 people received unemployment benefits in September, 107,000 more than a year ago.
“Unemployment and underemployment did decrease in September, but significantly less than usual this month. The start of the autumn recovery on the labor market is therefore slow this year,” said the Federal Agency’s CEO, Andrea Nahles, in Nuremberg.
The German labor market had already felt the consequences of economic stagnation in August. Unemployment and underemployment continued to increase during the summer break. A recovery usually begins in September.
The demand for workers also continued to decline. According to the Federal Agency, 696,000 vacancies were still registered for replacement in September. That’s 65,000 fewer than a year ago.
In a comparison of the federal states, unemployment is highest in Bremen with a rate of 11.1 percent, followed by Berlin at 9.8 percent. Bavaria has the lowest unemployment rate in a country comparison at 3.8 percent. The free states of Thuringia and Brandenburg are the eastern German states with the lowest rate at 6.1 percent each.
Short-time work could increase slightly again. Between September 1st and 23rd, notifications for short-time work were received for 65,000 people. This represents a significant increase compared to the previous month.
