All Christmas markets are wonderful in general and each is wonderful in its own way. There are many ways to try to find the most comfortable, attractive and charming – for yourself personally or in the opinion of the public. The general public actively uses social networks and leaves enough digital traces for statistical analysis.
In mid-December, at the height of the pre-holiday season in Germany, an up-to-date ranking of the popularity of European and German Christmas markets was published based on views of posts on TikTok, equipped with the corresponding hashtags.
The most popular Christmas markets in Europe
As a result of a study commissioned by the trading platform Ruggable, in Germany, the Christmas Magic Market (Cranger Weihnachtszauber) in the city of Herne in the Ruhr region was in first place. In the European list, this market took fourth place after Winter Wonderland in London, Champ de Mars near the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Manchester Christmas Markets.
The famous winter fair in London is visited by about 2.5 million people annually, so it leads in the number of views on TikTok with an astronomical figure of two and a half billion. The number of views of content from the Paris market exceeded 16 million, the Manchester festival reached almost 15 million. However, how were the seats distributed in Germany?

The most popular German Christmas market of 2023 on TikTok has only been around for a short time, compared to the age of Germany’s oldest Dresden Striezelmarkt, first mentioned in 1434.
The first Cranger Weihnachtszauber Christmas market took place in Herne in 2018 on the grounds of the local traditional fair, the summer folk festival Cranger Kirmes in the city’s Krange district, which is visited by an average of four million people. The organizers of the new Christmas market took advantage of the experience and connections accumulated here over many centuries.
Christmas and attractions
The first written mention of a summer fair in Herne dates back to 1703. The Herne Christmas Market is both a festive market and a folk fair, with rides and performances. In 2019, before the start of the pandemic, about 225 thousand people visited here. There is a fee for entering the territory – two euros for each visitor over four years of age.

Total market area Cranger Christmas magic is almost 30 thousand square meters In addition to various trade tents and pavilions, there are about a hundred attractions installed here on the banks of the Rhein-Herne-Kanal. In the middle of the fair stands a 45-meter artificial tree, which organizers call “the largest mobile Christmas tree in the world.”
Over the few years of its existence, the Christmas Magic Market in Herne has become famous far beyond its region. People come here not only from the cities of the populous Ruhr region in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also from various European countries – for example, the neighboring Netherlands and Belgium.
