Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader termed BNP as the ‘main obstacle’ in the implementation of democratic ideals and said that their statement about democracy is nothing but a cry.
In a statement on Monday (April 8), he said, ‘BNP leaders should have apologized unconditionally to the nation for their undemocratic actions. However, instead of doing that, they are giving inconclusive statements as always.’
“When the killers of democracy talk about democracy today, they have different intentions. It is nothing but their cry for democracy. BNP has no responsibility towards democracy.’
General Secretary of Awami League said, ‘This cry of theirs for democracy is basically to take the country back to the misrule era of Tariq Rahman, the mastermind of the 21st August grenade attack, the master of Hawa Bhavan-Khwab Bhavan, the son of corruption, terrorism and corruption. The democratic and patriotic civil society of this country is united today against the evil forces of darkness.
In the statement, Obaidul Quader condemned and protested the ‘false and mischievous’ statements of BNP leaders. He said that the progress of Bangladesh was disrupted by killing the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family. Besides, the spirit of the Great Liberation War and democracy were subverted. Similarly, a gang of assassins killed four national leaders in jail on November 3. That day, the gang killed helpless women and children indiscriminately. Where was democracy that day? Where was the human rights? History laughs ironically when the BNP, born by the murderer Zia after the most brutal killings of 1975, talks about democracy and human rights.
Referring to the ‘curfew mark democracy’ during Bangabandhu’s assassination, the general secretary of Awami League said, ‘Ziaur Rahman, the founder of BNP, the cruel military dictator of the history, illegally seized the state power by holding the nation hostage at gunpoint in an unconstitutional way. Ziaur Rahman usurped the presidency by forcibly removing Justice Sayem at gunpoint. In 1977, dictator Ziaur Rahman destroyed the country’s democratic values and electoral system in the name of farcical yes-no vote elections. Zia’s so called democracy was curfew marka democracy!’

Mirpur and Magura Marka by-elections were gifted to the nation by BNP. BNP formed the Aziz Marka Election Commission and created 1 crore 23 lakh fake voters in order to seize power by rigging the elections. In the name of Operation Clean Heart, a terrible precedent was set for torture and torture of opposition party leaders. During the period after 2001, 21 thousand Awami League leaders and activists were killed during the BNP-Jamaat alliance regime. Born in the womb of dictatorship, BNP is continuing its inaction to subvert the ideals and values of the great liberation war and democracy.’
