With sadness, the Museum of Modern Art (MAMM) released news today: Emiliano Valdesare chief curatorhas decided to end his time at the museum on Next December 31, 2024. His work has been recognized inside and outside Colombia and has been valued for his desire to bring audiences closer to art, without pretense, without a hint of superiority.
Regarding this fact, he said: “For me it has been a privilege to contribute to taking the Museum of Modern Art of Medellín to the place of vitality, plurality, relevance and artistic rigor in which it is today. The last decade has been fundamental in the expansion and positioning of MAMM in the country and the region and I feel extremely proud and lucky to have been part of it with a wonderful team. The time has come to renew my work models and my professional interests to also give way to a new stage in which the Museum continues to be the ‘place for the art of its time’ that was proposed from its beginnings.
Since his arrival at MAMM, Emiliano has led and developed nearly 100 exhibitions and special projectspromoting a broad and diverse interaction with the city, towards which he showed genuine interest, knowing in depth its artistic scene, establishing dialogues with artists, groups and cultural managers, participating in countless city events and putting it on the museum’s agenda crucial issues to understand and critically reflect on.
The above was reflected in such outstanding initiatives as “Medellín. Pulse of the city”, an exhibition that brought together the work of artists and groups dedicated to thinking about the most pressing challenges of the city through art; in group exhibitions such as “The longest way. Contemporary art in Antioquia”, “Sculpture courtyard”, “Art in Antioquia and the decade of the 70s”. “An Interpretation, and Desire. An exhibition about sex, love and lust”; or in individual works by Antioquia artists such as Débora Arango, Libia Posada, Beatriz Olano, Jorge Julián Aristizábal, John Mario Ortiz, Ángela María Restrepo, Martha Ramírez, Leonel Estrada, among others.
Under the curatorial direction of Valdés, the MAMM has also been the house of colombian contemporary art and has contributed to the professionalization of its scene. Exhibitions such as “The Good Life” show this.. “Works from the Collection of the Banco de la República” or “Past future tense”. “Art in Colombia in the 21st century”, or the exhibitions of the artists María Teresa Hincapié, Juan Mejía, María Isabel Rueda, Manuel Hernández, Carlos Motta and Karen Lamassonne.
