Former Indian-born OpenAI employee Suchir Balaji, who accused the company of violating US copyright law, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment. This was reported by The Times of India.

As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, the body of 26-year-old Balaji was found on November 26. According to the San Francisco police and the medical examiner, he committed suicide; no signs of violent death were found.

According to The Times of India, the ex-employee left OpenAI in August 2024, where he worked on the ChatGPT service for 1.5 years. Balaji accused the company of violating copyright laws during the development of the service. He also expressed concerns about the possible negative impact of the OpenAI model on society, which, in his opinion, is “unsustainable for the Internet ecosystem” and harms the companies whose data is used to “train” ChatGPT.

The publication also reported that Suchir Balaji was one of the key witnesses in the lawsuit against OpenAI, which was filed by The New York Times in 2023, and had documents in his possession that could be important to the case.
