Colombo: A man has been arrested in connection with the smuggling of Sri Lankan women to the Middle East. He was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport while returning to Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan police said that the 44-year-old man was involved in the smuggling of Sri Lankan women to Oman and Dubai.

Several young women stranded in Abu Dhabi, UAE, had contacted a celebrity couple in Sri Lanka and requested for help. There were recent reports that they were suspected to be links in a human trafficking racket. The incident involving 17 Sri Lankan nationals who came to Abu Dhabi on visit visas in anticipation of foreign employment was a big news in the media recently. This came to the attention of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Abu Dhabi and based on that, the embassy officials and UAE police officials visited the place and found 17 Sri Lankan nationals.

In the subsequent investigation, they revealed that they had no complaints. However, reports say that one of the group refused to go home and was forcibly sent to Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, on 15 November 2022, the Sri Lankan Embassy in Abu Dhabi informed that it has noticed that some people have crossed into Oman ignoring the embassy’s instructions to follow proper legal and immigration procedures. A person has been arrested in connection with this case. The Sri Lankan embassies in UAE and Oman are monitoring the situation regarding human trafficking and will make every effort to ensure the welfare of Sri Lankans.
