On April 27, Obukhov Plant, which is part of the Almaz-Antey defense concern, became the management company of the former Japanese Toyota plant in St. Petersburg. This is stated in the message of the concern dated May 3. The very production site of the Japanese manufacturer was recently bought by Shushary-Avto, a subsidiary of FSUE NAMI.

The management company will be engaged in all operational activities to manage the enterprise in order to organize the production of cars, the report says. In particular, in 2024, the production of the BAZ-S36A11 civilian truck developed by the Obukhov Plant is planned to start at this site. Starting from 2026, it is planned to launch the production of a model range of E-Neva electric vehicles, recalls Almaz-Antey.

The all-wheel drive BAZ-S36A11 was first introduced on April 10, 2023. The car weighing almost 36 tons has a load capacity of 22 tons and is powered by a YaMZ diesel engine with a capacity of 422 hp. With. The truck chassis can be equipped with a drilling, dumping and pumping superstructure, and can also be used as rescue and fire equipment, shift buses.

On April 12, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov spoke about the development of a project for the production of E-Neva at the former Toyota site in St. Petersburg. He admitted that before the start of the production of an electric car, cars of other brands would be produced at this plant to build up production. A source of Vedomosti, close to one of the parties to the project, estimated its investment need at the level of about 60 billion rubles.

The Russian division of Toyota – Toyota Motor Company – announced the closure of the assembly site in St. Petersburg in the fall of 2022. The company promised to fulfill all social obligations to the team, maintain after-sales service for Toyota and Lexus cars and support the dealer network. But after the sale of the asset, it was not planned to resume the production of Toyota cars at the site.

Toyota’s losses from the cessation of production in Russia, including the cost of compensating about 1,900 employees upon dismissal and asset impairment, amounted to approximately $650 million.

The Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defense Concern, one of the largest enterprises in the defense industry, produces air defense systems, including the latest long and medium-range anti-aircraft missile system (SAM) S-500, and various civilian products. Previously, the concern had practically nothing to do with the mass civilian auto industry, although its website reports, for example, on the production of sidewalk sweepers of the MK-1500M2 series.

It is possible to assemble BAZ trucks at the former Toyota plant, but not on a conveyor – it is a frame and heavy structure, says Sergey Burgazliev, an independent automotive industry consultant. According to him, these vehicles will be produced in St. Petersburg using the SKD method. Plans for the development of the production of electric vehicles E-Neva in 2026, he considers “quite realistic.”
