The Marvels: Film Flops with Worst Opening Weekend in MCU History

by time news

In the latest news from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has been reported that “The Marvels” has had the worst opening weekend in the franchise’s history. The film, which is the latest installment in the MCU, was predicted to have a low box office turnout, and unfortunately, those predictions have come to fruition.

Opening to just $21.5 million in the US on its first day, “The Marvels” continued to disappoint over the weekend, bringing in just $47 million in total. This placed the film at the lower end of its estimated domestic takings and gave it the worst US opening weekend of any MCU film, against an estimated budget of $220 million.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, “The Marvels” is the follow-up to 2019’s “Captain Marvel” and stars Brie Larson as the titular superhero. The film also features Iman Vallani from “Ms Marvel” and Teyonah Paris from “WandaVision.”

Some early reviewers were “pleasantly surprised” by the film, but it seems the general audience did not share the same enthusiasm. Criticisms of the film included it being a “disjointed mess” with a “rushed” final act.

Despite the disappointing box office figures, film critic Clarisse Loughrey offered a more positive review, calling the film “marvellous” in a four-star review for The Independent.

The underwhelming performance of “The Marvels” is the latest in a series of setbacks for the MCU, as the franchise attempts to introduce new characters and create fresh franchises. The previous few releases, including “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” have also failed to reach previous heights critically and commercially.

“The Marvels” is currently in cinemas, and it remains to be seen how the film will perform in the coming weeks.
