A dream car, extreme, futuristic, almost irrational and definitely beautiful, capable of remaining in the memory of every motor enthusiast: half a century has passed since March 9, 1972, when the Maserati Boomerang was presented at the Genoa Motor Show. . It was a concept car designed by the famous Giorgetto Giugiaroy produced by Italdesign.

The Maserati Boomerang, the prototype of which made a fleeting appearance at the 1971 Turin Motor Show, was built as a one-off and was presented at the 1972 Swiss Motor Show as a fully functional and registered model. The base used by Italdesign (the entire chassis and mechanics) was a Maserati Bora, with a 4,719 cc 8-cylinder V-shaped (90º) engine in the rear central position.

The unit could develop up to 310 hp of power, achieving a maximum speed of almost 300 km/h. It had rear-wheel drive and a five-speed gearbox.

The two-seater sports coupé never made it to production. However, he left a legacy of style that continued to be present not only in subsequent Giugiaro creations, but also in other projects, inspiring various car manufacturers in Europe and the United States.

The originality of the Boomerang, from an aesthetic point of view, was evident thanks to its wedge shape, and its clear and daring lines, which conveyed an image of penetration, power and speed.

The model was designed through a horizontal line that divided the car into two volumes, with a sloping windshield and a panoramic roof. The windows of the two doors were really original, and were interspersed with a strip of metal. Retractable square headlights stood out at the front, along with horizontal lights at the rear.

It was extremely modern inside too, where the dashboard instrumentation was integrated into a spokeless steering wheel and the seats were positioned very low.

The only produced unit of the Boomerang could also be seen at other international events. It was passed from hand to hand, having several owners and being the protagonist of several auctions, as well as being used in some advertisements.

The Maserati Boomerang, considered by many to be a true work of art, was a revolutionary piece capable of influencing the design of subsequent cars. Thus, it continued with the tradition of Maserati as a brand capable of creating unique automotive concepts, iconic and avant-garde cars, pioneers in technology and style.

Now more than ever, Maserati is unique by design and innovative by nature with the MC20 supercar, the new Grecale SUV and the Nettuno engine, patented by the brand and synonymous with technological revolution.
