A lone gunman shot at the Mayor of Acayucan, Veracruz, Rosalba Rodriguez Rodriguez, on August 12, 2024. The mayor emerged unharmed from the attack.
The gunman fired two shots, one hitting the facade of a cafeteria or food business and another hitting the vehicle usually accompanying the mayor. Despite having bodyguards, the attack surprised both the inhabitants and the police. The attacker fled in a waiting vehicle and his current whereabouts are unknown.
The Acayucan City Council confirmed the attack and stated that it occurred around 11:35 a.m. on Ruiz Flores Street. The mayor’s office has recently experienced a surge in violence.
