“It is an honor for me to have the opportunity to open the traditional International Tournament of Accelerated Chess and Blitz. The fact that for another year we managed to organize this tournament and 240 participants from 12 countries signed up for it, showed what level it is. Our goal is for the cradle of chess in Bulgaria to be the city of Shumen”. With these words, the mayor of the city of Shumen, Prof. Hristo Hristov, opened the “Open Shumen” international accelerated chess and blitz tournament.
For his part, the director of the club, Atanas Dimitrov, thanked the Shumen Municipality for its support and wished all participants a pleasant game.
“Open Shumen” is the biggest chess competition in Bulgaria and attracts competitors from all over the country and from different corners of the world. The total prize fund is BGN 20,000.
This year the tournament will be held in the period July 26-28 in the “Arena Shumen” hall.
“We are excited that Shumen is once again hosting an event of such rank and that we will have the opportunity to welcome competitors and guests from so many different places,” commented Iliyan Haralanov, chairman of the “Shoumen” SKS.
