It’s difficult to get any stronger in terms of symbolism: after the revolutionary-looking mascots of a Phrygian cap, a slender Olympic torch, here are the medals containing a small piece of the Eiffel Tower. The organizing committee for the Paris Olympic Games unveiled this Thursday, February 8, the models of charms which will be awarded next summer during the Olympics and Paralympics.

Designed by the jeweler Chaumet and manufactured by the Paris Mint, the Olympic medals have a hexagon inlaid in their center and will all contain 18 grams of metal from the Eiffel Tower of 1899, metal taken during successive repairs.

Two “absolute symbols”

They therefore unite two “absolute symbols” of France, welcomed Tony Estanguet, president of Cojo during a press conference at Pulse, the headquarters of the organizing committee in Saint-Denis (Seine-Saint-Denis) . “Medals are important. For me, it’s sometimes the only proof for my daughters that “dad did it”,” smiled Martin Fourcade, five-time Olympic biathlon champion and president of the Paris 2024 athletes’ commission.

The London 2012 Games medals featured the River Thames in an abstract design, accompanied by the competition logo. Four years later, Rio chose a laurel wreath surrounding the logo of its Games. In 2020, Tokyo proposed a modern design made of chiseled circles around the Games logo.

According to IOC rules, the gold medal must have a minimum content of 92.5% silver which is then plated with six grams of gold. The silver medals only contain silver and the bronze medals are actually made of copper, tin and zinc.
