The Media Association (AMI), representative of the media industry in Spain, supports the lawsuit that The New York Times filed on Wednesday against Microsoft and OpenAI for using its journalistic content without consent or payment to train its model of artificial intelligence (AI).

The New York newspaper has accused the two tech giants of violating their copyright by exploiting “millions of their articles” to feed the technology that gives life to some of their products, such as ChatGPT or Copilot. His complaint states that the “illegal copying” of his articles of “unique value” poses a direct threat to journalism’s business model.

The Spanish media agree to denounce that the “improper use” of journalistic content by Microsoft and OpenAI allows them to “create products that compete directly with the newspaper itself, which threatens the sustainability of the headline”.

“Predators”

“The innovation that technology brings to society cannot be based on predatory behavior that denies the rights of the media, when these are fundamental to the creation of this innovation,” said Irene Lanzaco in a statement, director of the AMI

The New York Times is the first major media outlet to go to court. Others, such as German media giant Axel Springer, have made financial deals so that ChatGPT can incorporate news from their paid headers. The AMI could lean towards this model.

The AMI represents more than 80 Spanish media from media groups such as Prensa Ibérica, owner of EL PERIÓDICO, as well as Prisa Media, Unidad Editorial, Grup Godó and Vocento.
