US law enforcement and intelligence agencies have several legal ways to extract confidential user data from the most popular instant messengers. We are talking, in particular, about WhatsApp (owned by Meta Platforms) and iMessage (developed by Apple), writes Rolling Stone, citing an FBI document entitled “Legal Access”.

As noted by the publication, the document, dated January 7, 2021, describes the process of how law enforcement agencies can use several legal methods to extract the confidential data of users of the world’s most popular messaging applications.

The document provides the FBI’s internal guidance on what types of data state and federal law enforcement agencies can request from the guides of the nine largest messaging applications.

Technology legal experts who have studied the document told the publication that it is rare to get such detailed information about law enforcement access to messaging services.

The document says that WhatsApp provides more information about users than other well-known apps. With the help of a court order, investigators can get basic information about a user, and with a search warrant – contacts from his address book and a list of users who have him in the contact list.
