The vice president of the Constitutional Court Daria de Pretis holds the usual conference on 18 August (5.00 pm), in the Trentino town where the Christian Democrat statesman was born
Autonomy for De Gasperi is above all an expression of “trust in the people to administer themselves”, and is grafted, as evident, into the broader question of democracy, which was so close to his heart. Thus Daria de Pretis, vice president of the Constitutional Court recalls the autonomist vision of the Christian Democrat leader in the conference scheduled for August 18 in Pieve Tesino, De Gasperi’s birthplace.
This is the lectio traditionally held on the anniversary of the disappearance of the statesman, who died on 19 August 1954, on the initiative of the Alcide De Gasperi Foundation in Trentino, directed by Giuseppe Tognon. An opportunity to explore the various aspects of the personality and work of the leader who led the reconstruction of the country after the deaths and destruction of the Second World War.
Central to de Pretis’ reflections is the characterization of De Gasperi as a man on the border, aware of the dangers entailed by the nationalist opposition between ethnic groups, therefore a convinced advocate of European integration and an equally firm supporter of the need to articulate the constitutional system on a robust fabric of autonomy. We owe him the important De Gasperi-Gruber agreement, which fixed the fixed points relating to the treatment of the German-speaking minority in terms of autonomy, a farsighted solution – observes de Pretis – which allowed progressive adaptations of the autonomy itself.
