The steering committee meeting of the Indian Ocean Commission-European Union (IOC-EU) program on building resilience and disaster response management in the Indian Ocean was held yesterday in Antananarivo . Madagascar, as the country holding the current presidency of the IOC, hosted it, and was represented by the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC).

The purpose of this meeting was to analyze the overall progress of the program and its consistency with the various components as well as to examine the programming of activities planned for the year 2023 and to propose adjustments if necessary. It allows Madagascar to strengthen its regional cooperation in the management of risks and natural disasters.

The COI-EU project aims to strengthen the resilience of Commission member countries to natural disasters, such as cyclones, floods and droughts as well as to improve regional coordination in crisis management. It is therefore crucial that member countries review the progress of the program and ensure its consistency with the various components to achieve their common objectives.

During this meeting, representatives of the various IOC member countries and experts in risk management and natural disasters reviewed the progress made so far. This will continue with a peer-to-peer learning workshop starting today for three days, until April 27. This workshop focuses on institutional capacity building for disaster risk reduction in the Indian Ocean.

This workshop will also be an opportunity for Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles to examine regional priorities with the priorities of the Sendai framework for disaster reduction 2015-2030. These priorities include understanding disaster risk, strengthening risk governance to better manage it, investing in risk reduction for resilience, and building disaster preparedness.
