Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski announced today that the new members from the North Macedonian side of the team of the mixed commission on historical and educational issues between North Macedonia and Bulgaria will be announced at the next or the next meeting of the government, MIA reported.

“These days I expect to see the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. He is now out of the country. When we meet, we will specify them. There are some ideas, there are some thoughts. I think that at the next or the next meeting of the government, the new composition of the commission that negotiates on historical issues with our eastern neighbor and also with our southern neighbor (Greece) will pass, Mitskoski said after the ceremony to start construction of lithium battery plant in Skopje, which he attended today.

The Joint Commission on Historical and Educational Affairs was formed according to the Agreement on Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation, signed on August 1, 2017 in Skopje by the then Prime Ministers Zoran Zaev and Boyko Borisov. It was formed by scientists from both countries.

Despite the political events on both sides of the border, the members of this body held meetings, although the public impression is that the commission’s activities are at a dead end, noted Radio Free Europe at the end of last month. The last recommendations, on which historians from Bulgaria and North Macedonia agreed, were published two years ago. Their last meeting was in June and was the third of the year. According to the annual work plan, a total of six meetings are planned, which means that, in addition to the meeting on September 18 and 19 in Skopje, two more meetings must be held by the end of December, writes BTA.

At the moment, the discussion is blocked on history textbooks – for the sixth grade in Bulgaria and for the seventh grade in North Macedonia.
