May 13 marked 42 years since the death of the brilliant composer, People’s Artist of the USSR and Azerbaijan, Hero of Socialist Labor, State Prize laureate Gara Garayev (1918-1982). Gara Garayev has a special place in the glorious history of Azerbaijani musical art. The successor of two great composers of the 20th century – Uzeyir Hajibeyli and Dmitry Shostakovich, Gara Garayev already during his lifetime became the leader and recognized head of the Azerbaijani school of composition, pushing it to the most advanced frontiers of world musical art.
As Day.Az was informed by the press service of the Union of Composers, the work of Gar Garayev, marked by such masterpieces as the ballets “Seven Beauties” and “The Path of Thunder”, four symphonies, symphonic engravings “Don Quixote”, the Violin Concerto, was included in the gold fund of the world musical culture, became a powerful engine for subsequent generations of composers in the world of discovery of new forms, musical language and means of musical expression.
For more than 30 years, Gara Garayev was the chairman of the Azerbaijan Composers Union. During this time, the activities of the creative organization acquired a wide scope and reached the international level.
An important component of Gar Garayev’s creativity was his many years of teaching activity at the Azerbaijan Conservatory, to which he devoted a significant part of his precious time. Its result was the creation of an entire school of composers – the school of Gara Garayev. More than fifty of its graduates have successfully worked and are working both in Azerbaijan and abroad, implementing the creative behests of their Teacher.
On the day of remembrance of the outstanding composer, students and admirers of Gara Garayev’s work, representatives of the capital’s musical community gathered in the Alley of Honor. The secretaries of the Union of Composers, honored artists Jalal Abbasov and Zemfira Gafarova were present here. A word about Gara Garayev was spoken by the Chairman of the Union of Composers of Azerbaijan, People’s Artist, Corresponding Member of ANAS, Professor Frangiz Alizade. The composer’s daughter, Zuleikha Garayeva-Bagirova, also shared her memories of Gara Garayev.
Flowers were laid on the grave of Gara Garaeva, Uzeira Hajibeyli, Fikret Amirova, Tofik Kulieva, Vasif Adygezalova, who made a significant contribution to the history of the Union of Composers of Azerbaijan.
