Support for vulnerable households in Ngozi: The cash transfer program

Butanyerera (Ngozi), October 10, 2023 – In perfect alignment with the socio-economic policy of Burundi, Monsieur Minani Désiré, governor of Ngozichaired a workshop organized by MERANKABANDI. This event aimed to inform and promote consultation with stakeholders, namely Caritas, Pathfinder International and ActionAid International Burundi, etc. concerning the project to support productive social safety nets and employment.

MERANKABANDI benefits from the financial support of the International Development Association (IDA) [1] for the implementation of a cash transfer program combined with complementary activities, aimed at the most vulnerable rural households. These monetary transfers amount to 40,000 BIF (24 USD) every two monthsand are intended to households with children aged 0 to 12 living in situations of extreme poverty and vulnerability in selected areas. They are accompanied by complementary measures aimed at encouraging beneficiaries to invest in their human capital, thus consolidating the key mechanisms put in place for the development of the social safety net system.

The Barundi saw their traditional economic system, called “ubumu” [2]officially disappear between 1959 and 1972-1973, during the tragic events of the Regicide Genocide [3], including the Genocide against the Barundi “abahutu”. This system was replaced by a market economy, an exogenous structure, foreign and poorly controlled by the Barundi. Since then, Burundi has become one of the poorest countries in the world.
