Organizing a range like that of Mercedes-Benz should not be easy. For this reason, when the Stuttgart brand unveiled the AMG SL, its most recent two-seater convertible, they had to make a decision with the AMG GT that they presented in 2015 and avoid both models being competitors.

The solution has been to make the GT a true grand tourer that would live up to its name. To do this, nothing like adding a bit of length (up to 4.73 meters long, 20 cm more), two seats and maintaining the high performance expected of this model. Specifically, it will use the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. This, also used by the AMG SL, is available in two powers 476 (GT 55) and 585 (GT 63).

In numbers, the more powerful of the two is capable of reaching 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds. The 55 version does it in seven tenths more. The maximum speed is limited to 315 km/h. It is expected that in the future, electrified variants will arrive in the range with even more power.

Both engines are mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive. In addition, the rear axle is directional and they have a system called ‘Active ride control’, to hydraulically stabilize the roll in curves.

Despite being a luxury brand, Mercedes-Benz cannot help but be a company of German engineers. Thus, the new AMG GT has hundreds of sensors that monitor all the inclination and steering parameters of the tires and the forces they exert to improve driving.

As for the design, the continuation of the lines of the previous AMG GT is clearly seen, although more rounded and refined. The larger size and 2+2 configuration puts it head-on against competitors like the BMW 8 Series, the Porsche 911, or the Bentley Continental GT.

Inside, the new Mercedes cockpit language is on display, similar to that shown in the AMG SL. The center of the dashboard is dominated by a vertical format touchscreen from which multimedia functions can be controlled.

Although the problem of ‘cannibalization’ between the brand’s two sports convertibles has been refined, now the AMG GT faces another model within the Stuttgart stable: the four-door AMG GT. Although the latter is “more moderate” in design – it continues to deliver 843 horsepower in its most powerful version – it is also capable of carrying more than two passengers and has the coveted AMG emblem.
