“What if you could make aluminum more conductive, even 80% or 90% as conductive as copper? You could replace it and that would make a huge difference because aluminum is lighter, cheaper and more abundant,” Keerti Kappagantula, a scientist at PNNL, said in a statement.

How was the conductivity of aluminum increased?

To achieve greater conductivity from aluminum, the PNNL team focused their efforts on modifying the atomic structure of metalin addition to identifying its temperature effects and structural defects as a conductor.

“We didn’t think these results would be so close to reality,” Kappagantula said. “This model simulation that is based on the atomic structure and its different states is so accurate that I said, ‘Oh, that’s right on target. ’ It’s very exciting.”

According to experts, the next step is to move from simulations to laboratory experiments to see if theory matches the results.
