This is always the case with functional clothing and bags. On the one hand, as the name suggests, they’re supposed to work in the wild, but in recent years they’ve also been said to look good in civilization. So good that you cut an attractive figure in everyday urban life and yet latently hint that you have another, more adventurous and dangerous life. “Business meets outdoor” is what this means in marketing language and is reflected in product names such as “Metrosphere”. This is the name of a new series from the German bag manufacturer Ortlieb, known for 40 years for its waterproof products, but not necessarily for its office look. This has changed now.

Simple, light and waterproof: the bag is made of coated nylon fabric. : Image: Ortlieb

The new series of travel bags (duffles), travel backpacks (atracks) and daypacks (daypacks) look like a Goretex jacket crossed with a tailored suit. The subtle black-gray herringbone design of the coated nylon fabric gives the 40-liter duffle we tested a simple, elegant and robust appearance. There’s not much to the bag, which weighs 770 grams. In principle, it is a waterproof deluxe pack bag with a handle, one inside and one outside pocket, two carrying/backpack straps and the completely waterproof zipper that runs across the bag and whose ends snap into two holders using magnets. This reduces the size if you are traveling with less luggage, or compresses the bag if you pack it to the brim. All of this is almost a little too minimalistic, because when the duffle is only partially packed, the lightweight thing collapses like a stale wheat beer. We also missed another inner compartment or division to keep things organized. But if the bag is fully packed, it can also be worn comfortably as a backpack – surprisingly, you don’t feel the zipper on the back at all. It seals the bag really watertight, which we tested in the bathtub, and you could now set off on an expedition to the rainy Sauerland or the upper reaches of the Congo.
