Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed that “the Middle East is on the brink of a major regional war.”

“The Middle East is once again on the brink of a major regional war, and it is our common responsibility to prevent this,” Lavrov said during the ministerial meeting of the strategic dialogue between the Gulf Cooperation Council and Russia.

He explained that “Russia is working with all parties in this regard,” noting that “without resolving the Palestinian-Israeli problem, the Middle East will not be able to develop in a stable manner.”

Lavrov pointed out that “the inability of the international community to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip has led to a sharp deterioration in the military-political situation throughout the Middle East, from the borders of Lebanon and Israel to the Red Sea, while at the same time the confrontation between Israel and Iran has reached a new dangerous level.”

He added that “the international community has failed to stop the aggression and killing in Gaza,” stressing that “the current violence against the Palestinians is unprecedented, and has not been witnessed in any of the Arab-Israeli wars.”

He explained that “the United States of America was the reason for obstructing all international legitimacy resolutions to cease fire in Gaza, stressing that Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council are making every effort to reach a ceasefire and establish an independent Palestinian state on the basis of international legitimacy resolutions,” and he stressed that “failure to settle all the region’s files will lead to a comprehensive war.”

Lavrov, who arrived in Riyadh yesterday, held bilateral negotiations with the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Al-Badawi, as well as Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan.

The ministerial meeting of the strategic dialogue between the Gulf Cooperation Council and Russia, between Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, will discuss issues of enhancing regional security, resolving crises and the state of the global economy. The Gulf Cooperation Council includes Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
