more than 150 years ago Strawberries were grown in what is now Eirs Park. They were the most famous of the whole city. When August arrived, they selected the best product to display and taste it at neighborhood festivals, but over time this tradition was lost. A few years ago the neighbors fought to return the festivity to the neighborhood. Currently, strawberries have not been grown in Eirs for quite some time, but every summer, as part of the program for the María Pita Festival, the Uxo Carr neighborhood association, in collaboration with the City Council, celebrates the traditional Strawberry Festival. .
Ms de 120 kilos of strawberries donated by Frutas Geixade and Eroski were distributed in less than an hour. Since before 7:00 p.m., residents of the neighborhood and from all parts of the city waited in a queue that went around the dome of Eirs to savor the Galician strawberry. Galician but not from Eirs, specifically from Abegondo, where Manuel and Miguel, two brothers from the parish of Sarands, own one of the largest strawberry plantations in the community. For several years we have been collaborating with the neighborhood association to celebrate this festival. It is a pride to participate, we donate several kilos to distribute them among the neighbors and we also sell many others to make ourselves known, acknowledged Manuel.
The good and free walks know better Brome Emilio. More than 800 glasses of strawberries delivered in just under an hour. Some did not arrive on time and queues also formed at the small Geixade stall. From the neighborhood association they admitted that the distribution was a complicated moment and that they did not expect so much participation. Many neighbors came to taste the fruit, like Laura Temprano. This celebration is important for recognize the work of our ancestors in the neighborhood and let us not forget, said Laura, referring to her grandmother who had already been selling strawberries in Eirs for more than 100 years. Most of them stayed until their bodies could bear it, like Miriela, Fernando and their little ones Teresa and Javi, a family from Eirs who had already enjoyed the morning programming, or like Victoria, Carmen, Manolo, Lourdes, Mari and Emilio, a group of retirees who plan to stay for everything. For what I have left in the convent I shit inside, Victoria joked, assuring that they planned to give everything in the subsequent festival.
The tasting and exaltation of the strawberry is the main attraction of this festivity that had a very complete program. Dancing, gastronomy, children’s attractions, music, performances and competitions for the whole family throughout the day to celebrate the neighborhood festivals in style.
