An increase in the minimum wage will occur soon.
The minimum price will actually increase. No, this is not a campaign promise but a virtual economic certainty. It is also not a government decision but an automatic renewal, in force for many years. In a few weeks, the minimum wage will allow three million French people to pay a little better. Let’s not hide it: this will not stop their daily lives or give them more living conditions.
Although daily prices are rising much more slowly than last year, the fact remains that shopping is still more expensive, just like all consumer goods. Not to mention energy bills (electricity, gas, oil, etc.). The increase is certainly slower but has been continuous and significant since the beginning of the year. Which will lead to an increase in the minimum wage.
The calculation of the increase in the minimum income is in fact based on the evolution of consumer prices, more precisely on the increase that represents the 20% of the lowest families. Their purchasing power is, by definition, less than that of the average household, all the more vulnerable to price increases.
Between November 2023 and June 2024, prices increased by 1.36% for this segment of the population. However, the minimum wage increases automatically if the increase reaches 2% from November. The data can therefore seem far from the mark. However, INSEE announces Linternaute that, by the end of August, inflation from November will have reached 2%. The accounting institute is counting on a significant increase in prices this summer, mainly due to price increases during the Olympic Games.
This will therefore lead to an automatic renewal of the SMIC around 2%. This should be in the fall, according to INSEE. Data on inflation for the month of August will not be known until mid-September and will lead to an increase only in the minimum wage on October 1, at the beginning.
Normally, for employees paid in this way, the minimum wage should increase from net 1,398.69 euros per month to net 1,426.66 euros per month, or 27.97 euros more which will arrive in the bank account.
