The Ministry of Digital Development is discussing the option of providing free frequencies to operators for 5G

In Russia, the possibility of free reception by telecom operators of the frequencies necessary for the provision of 5G services is being discussed. This issue is now being studied by the Ministry of Digital Development, head of the department Maksut Shadayev told TASS.

“We are now discussing the issue that the frequencies needed for 5G will be provided without charging fees to operators. Since we use the 4.8-4.9 GHz range, which requires a significantly higher frequency of installation of base stations than in the classic 3.4-3.5 GHz range, we have now come up with the initiative to cancel the spectrum fee, ”- Shadayev said.

In December, it was reported that the State Commission on Radio Frequencies was considering expanding the range for 5G networks in million-plus cities.

“Previously, the 4.8-4.99 GHz range was identified by the commission as promising, and now separate bands in the 4.4-4.8 GHz range are being added for testing,” the Ministry of Digital Development noted.

In November last year, analysts recorded a decrease in mobile Internet speed for the first time in 10 years, since the fourth generation (4G) networks began to be actively deployed. Telecom Daily CEO Denis Kuskov explained this by the fact that the development and modernization of networks do not keep pace with traffic growth and increased load. “Although operators have upgraded networks by adding new base stations, there will be no increase in speeds until the introduction of the 5G standard,” he said.
