The Ministry of Digital Science proposed to register air passengers using biometrics

by time news

The ministry is discussing with airports pilot projects for registering passengers for a flight using biometric data, without a passport, RIA Novosti reported, citing the head of the ministry, Maksut Shadayev.

According to Russian law, a biometric system is analogous to a passport. “This means that during check-in at the airport, when performing any other actions where it is required to show a passport, biometric identification will be possible. Now we are already discussing pilots with airports … to unload (airports), make check-in faster, and board the flight … everything will work on biometrics, “Shadayev said.

A unified biometric system is a digital platform, one of the elements of a person’s identification mechanism based on his biometric data. The system should improve the availability of services that require legally valid proof of identity.

On April 29, the owner of the Novaport holding, Roman Trotsenko, announced that testing of biometric equipment would begin at the holding’s airports by the end of the year. The holding owns 17 airports in various cities of Russia. Testing will begin at the Tolmachevo airport in Novosibirsk.

Earlier it became known that the Moscow Sheremetyevo airport will conduct a similar experiment to identify passengers by face when boarding a plane in September this year. This was reported by TIme with reference to a copy of the working version of the action plan for the implementation of the project. The authenticity of the document was confirmed by three sources familiar with the details of the discussion. Two of them reported that the document is being discussed and has not yet been approved.
