The Ministry of Education plans to update the spelling and punctuation of the Russian language

by time news

The Ministry of Education has prepared a draft government decree, which should define a set of rules for Russian spelling and punctuation that meets the current state of the Russian language. The new set of rules is planned to be finalized by the end of 2021.

The draft resolution states that since 1956, when the “Rules of Russian Spelling and Punctuation” and the general “Spelling Dictionary of the Russian Language” were published, many changes have taken place in the language. In particular, many new words and constructions have appeared, the spelling of which is not regulated by the existing rules.

“The modern practice of writing requires the creation of an updated and orderly compulsory set of spelling rules,” the document says. Thus, the new set of rules for Russian spelling will not only reflect the norms fixed in the rules of 1956, but in many cases will supplement and clarify them.

The authors of the project note that society needs not only a complete reference book, but also the presence of a theoretical basis for the decisions taken in the codification of linguistic norms. Therefore, it is proposed to involve representatives of the Spelling Commission at the Russian Academy of Sciences, which has been working since 1991. Its main task is to prepare a complete text of the Russian spelling rules that corresponds to the current state of the Russian language.

RIA Novosti provides the following examples of innovations:

  • New words: dealer, killer, offshore, default, realtor, karate, low cost, car sharing.
  • New language units: mini (mini-tournament), midi (midi dress), video (video equipment), audio (audio equipment), media (media holding).
  • Updated rules for writing the letter e: laptop, master, plein air, racket, rap, Deng Xiaoping, Davis, Rambo, Salinger, Blair, Teffi, Sam, Maryland, Taipei.

Many of the outdated capitalization guidelines will also be changed.
