She emphasized that the Latvian Consulate in Vitebsk provides them with the necessary and possible consular support, while the provision of consular assistance in Belarus is hampered by the lack of rule of law in that country, as well as the minimal cooperation with Belarus in justice and other areas since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia supported by Belarus.

Eglīte noted that the principle of judicial independence is not respected in Belarus, and this significantly increases the risk of initiating fictitious cases against citizens of the European Union. Considering this and other security risks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly urges Latvian nationals not to travel to Belarus.

The press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Embassy of Latvia in Russia received information about 13 detainees in 2024. According to Eglīte, it is also difficult for the Latvian embassy in Russia to provide consular assistance to Latvian nationals and the embassy has limited opportunities for cooperation with the Russian authorities.

Also, according to the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, information about Latvian citizens detained in Russia is often not received.
