The Nord Stream 2 project envisages the construction of two lines of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters. m per year from the coast of Russia through the Baltic Sea to Germany. Now the pipe is being laid by two Russian pipelayers – Akademik Chersky and Fortuna. In December 2019, work was suspended after the decision of the Swiss Allseas to abandon pipe-laying due to possible sanctions from the United States. However, the construction was subsequently resumed. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September 2021.

On May 19, the US State Department refused to impose sanctions against the head of the company Matthias Warnig and the operator of the Nord Stream 2 AG gas pipeline. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov called the US decision a positive signal.
