The Ministry of Health called the unvaccinated “bridgehead of evolution” COVID-19

Coronavirus can evolve both in the body of vaccinated and unvaccinated people, but in the case of the latter, the likelihood of the emergence of new strains increases, said Vladimir Chulanov, chief freelance infectious disease specialist at the Ministry of Health.

“An unvaccinated person is, as it were, a springboard for the evolution of the virus. If a person is vaccinated, then the chance that his virus will evolve and be transmitted to someone is much lower, because he may not get sick at all and not become a source of infection, ”he said in an interview with RBC.

Thus, where the proportion of non-vaccinated is high, the likelihood of virus evolution is also greater, the expert concluded. As millions of people are sick in the world at the same time with COVID-19, many strains of coronavirus are emerging. They can be reduced through vaccination, Chulanov noted.

Whether the South African Omicron strain is the latest depends on the progress of the vaccination campaign, the availability of effective antiviral agents, as well as compliance with anti-COVID rules, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health said.

According to the operational headquarters on January 6, the level of herd immunity to coronavirus in Russia was 62.6% with a goal of 80%. Thus, 79 million citizens received the first vaccine against COVID-19, of which 75.1 million received both doses of the respective drugs.

Over the entire period of the pandemic, coronavirus was detected in 10.7 million Russians, follows from the statistics of the operational headquarters on January 13. Among them, almost 9.8 million people have recovered, 319,172 have died. The latest daily increase in infections was 21,155 cases. This figure was the highest since December 28, 2021. 740 patients with COVID-19 have died.
