The Ministry of Regional Development and Agriculture plans to ban caged chickens and hopes to find ways to support producers during the transition period with the help of European funds. According to Dava Foods, Estonia’s largest egg producer, the change will affect the price of eggs, writes ERR.
The Ministry plans to ban keeping chickens in cages from 2035, and also wants to ban the fitting of new premises for laying hens with cages from 2026.
According to Agriculture Minister Piret Hartman, the ban on caged chickens affects both consumers and local businesses, and it is also intended to improve the welfare of laying hens at a European level.
“The goal is to take a big step forward and at the same time give clarity to those entrepreneurs who are currently involved in egg production in Estonia. We hope that entrepreneurs are already ready for this and have done the preliminary work, so we, for our part, support this initiative in Europe so that the conditions are more equal and fairer for entrepreneurs,” Hartman said.
