Pope Francis, leader of the Catholic Church, and Egyptian Patriarch Tawadros II, leader of the Coptic Church, presided over the general audience at the Vatican on Wednesday, May 10, an unprecedented gesture of friendship between the two religions.

Tawadros II celebrates a four-day visit to Pope Francis to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the meeting between Paul VI and the Orthodox leader Shenouda III, held in May 1973, which began the dialogue between the two churches.

The Argentine pontiff warmly embraced the so-called “Coptic Pope”, who spoke before thousands of faithful gathered in Saint Peter’s Square for the traditional Wednesday general audience.

Several guests participated during the audience in the Vatican. However, the superhero Spiderman captured the attention when he came before the Supreme Pontiff and kissed his hand.

According to international media reports, the protagonist of this story is Mattia Villardita, a young man who founded “Supereroincorsia” (superheroes in the room, in Spanish), an association of volunteers who dress up to visit children in hospitals.

Villardita, who arrived in the Spiderman costume, met Pope Francis in June 2021, and during their first meeting the young man gave his superhero mask to the Supreme Pontiff.

The young man in the Spiderman costume attended the general audience in Saint Peter’s Square this Wednesday, May 10, and the images of the meeting with Pope Francis went viral. In addition, several netizens recalled that the superhero spends his free time visiting hospitals with the mission of alleviating some of the suffering of patients.
